    BitDefender Internet Security 2008

    September 4, 2008

    BitDefender Internet Security 2008

BitDefender was an excellent performer among security suites, but it’s best for experts who don’t need guidance regarding security extras and pop-up alerts and who don’t mind therough interface.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 ($40 for one PC, $50 for three PCs) pairs shining success with disappointing failure. It outperformed every other suite in crucial malware detection tests, unmasked every rootkit sample.

But this stellar performance behind the scenes was seriously marred by an unpleasant user experience. From aggravations with the initial installation to difficulties with warning pop-ups, BitDefender Internet Security 2008flaws are hard to brush off.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 did extremely well when subjected to AV-Test.org’s 674,589 inactive malware samples, detecting 98 percent of them. It also did the best job of detecting new, unknown malware in heuristics tests, with a 29 percent catch rate using one-month-old signatures. And it also tied for first with Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 for the fastest response (0 to 2 hours) to malware outbreaks.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 firewall successfully masked a protected PC against outside scans, but it displayed needless warnings when the Firefox Web browser tried to access the Internet. That program should be on any firewall’s list of known (and approved) applications.

The suite offers a good array of secondary features, including antiphishing, parental controls, antispam, and data privacy. But these extras need polish. The browser-based antiphishing tool didn’t block any sites until I enabled the feature’s heuristic detection, which is off by default. When I enabled parental control for other users, I wasn’t prompted to set a program password–but if you fail to do so and you set up your kids’ accounts with administrator rights, they’ll be able to turn off the parental controls.

BitDefender Internet Security 2008 warning pop-ups did a poor job of guiding us through the steps of removing a detected e-mail worm (Warezov). The pop-up alert had options for ignoring, quarantining, or deleting the file. But perhaps because ther malware was lurking inside a .zip file, the security suite’s default option was to ignore the infection. Choosing to quarantine the archive failed, but rather than alerting me to the failure. the program just popped up the same window without the quarantine option. Choosing delete finally worked.

If BitDefender Internet Security 2008 interface and warnings were anywhere near as good as its virus detection engine, the suite would be easy to recommend. But its confusing pop-ups, program bugs, and high false positive rate make it best suited to a user who has strong technical skills and can at times make the right security choices without guidance from the software.

    Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0

Secure surfing. The solution analyses web pages and blocks potentially malicious web-based content. It also blocks pop ups and ads, which are not simply irritating: virus writers often use ads to install Trojans that steal your confidential data or give the Trojan’s owner access to your computer.

    Privacy Control.

Many malicious programs attempt to locate and harvest user IDs and passwords for online bank accounts, auctions, shops, email, payment systems, chat rooms, online games and etc from Windows Protected Storage.Kaspersky Internet Security monitors and blocks all attempts to collect and forward your confidential data from this storage area.

Protection from phishing. Kaspersky Internet Security filters out phishing emails and protects you from accessing websites run by phishers who use social engineering to fool you into sharing your banking or online payment information.

Parental Control. Parents can protect their children from online predators by creating blacklists of individual websites, as well as identifying categories of forbidden content such as drugs, pornography and so on. These lists can be customized by user type for children, teens or adults. In addition, parents can manage their children’s Internet experience by limiting the amount of time they spend online.

Anti-virus protection and more.Protection from all of today’s Internet threats. Kaspersky Lab combines three protection technologies to protect you against viruses, Trojans, worms, keyloggers, rootkits and other threats. This means that you are safe from spyware, adware, pornware, crimeware and anything else today’s cyber criminals invent.

Firewall. The inbuilt personal firewall provides new generation protection from intrusions and data leaks. The default settings for popular applications control network and Internet activity using the IDS/IPS to prevent hackers from taking over your computer or stealing your data. Stealth mode allows you to surf safely and invisibly, protecting you from becoming atarget for hacker attacks.

Anti-spam protection. The anti-spam module uses a combination of filtration methods to protect you from spam targeting you personally: white and black lists of senders and content, self-modifying algorithms for text analysis, graphical spam analysis and more.

Self-protection. Today virus writers begin their attack on your computer by disabling anti-virus protection. Kaspersky Internet Security is designed to block all attempts to disable protection, leaving you to work and play securely.Restoring your data and your system

Rollback of malicious changes. Kaspersky Internet Security monitors system and application behavior for suspicious behavior. Once malicious behavior is detected, the process is blocked and any changes caused by malicious code are rolled back. Your system is clean and your original data is intact.

    Rescue disk.

Creating a rescue disk is quick and easy using the built in wizard in Kaspersky Internet Security .If your computer is ever attacked by a virus, you can restore and disinfect your system right away by yourself using the rescue disk you created even if the operating system has been damaged.

Webroot Child Safe - parental control tools

Child Safe, by Webroot Software, is similar to a parental control program.

With Child Safe parents can set time limits, including when and how long a user may utilize specific programs or access the Internet. This program can also create comprehensive reports of computer activity, so parents can know what sites their children visited and when, as well as what programs they used.

These reports can be emailed to parents daily, weekly or monthly. This program can also restrict kids from changing Windows system settings; it can block children from the control panel, network controls, taskbar and start menu properties and more. This software will work with the Vista operating system as well as XP.

The program runs quietly in the background and is inaccessible to anyone without the right passwords.Though this program works well as a parental control program, it does not have as many filtering features as some of the higher ranked programs. This software filters by URL, category and keyword, which may not be enough to block everything. This service is far more suitable as a parental control program since it excels with time restrictions and monitoring.

CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 Review

    August 21, 2008

CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 Review

Computer Associates came with their latest and better edition of CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 to propose a step forward in quality and features. Besides firewall, antivirus, antispyware, antispam, and parental control, the suite now contains data migration and a Web site inspector to identify malicious sites.

One thing you should be aware of is that, at install, CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 offers to set up the Yahoo! toolbar and make Yahoo! your default search engine which together with CA’s own Web site Inspector causes your browser to be kind of top-heavy.

The present firewall is obviously much better than what CA presented last year when it swapped from ZoneAlarm’s one to its Tiny Personal Firewall but improvement is still to be had. According to PCMAG, CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 passed most of the port-scanning tests but failed the Gibson Research’s ShieldsUp (CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 leaving from two to four less-used ports closed but not stealthed ). Opposite to using NIS 2008 or Panda Internet Security 2008’s modern styles of program control, the CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 user has to decide every time a program attempts to connect to the Internet whether to permit it.

Though it did not survive to fake mouse-clicks attack as Kaspersky and Norton products did, CA’s new version security system still showed high protective measures. The firewall offers a wide range of additional features — it can guard against malicious attachments from incoming e-mail and watch outgoing mail for behaviors, it can also block cookies, ads and script, having the ability to prevent the sending of predefined personal data in e-mail or over the Web.

As PCMAG described it, using client-side attacks from the Core Impact penetration testing utility proved itself worthy in revealing some of CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2008 vulnerabilities in the suite’s protection system which recommends Norton Internet Security 2008 as a better candidate to your security needs.

    Kaspersky Internet Security review

    August 19, 2008

    PC Magazine

Parental control is brand-new in this version of the suite, and its newness shows. On the plus side, it does offer multiple configuration profiles you can associate with specific Windows user accounts. By default, all users fall under the Child profile except those explicitly assigned to the Parent (no filtering) profile. You can also enable a Teenager profile and manually configure it for less-stringent filtering. The help system explains in detail how to create a custom profile—but this feature is not actually present in the program.

KIS7 filters Internet access at the network level, so it’s browser-independent. A child won’t have access to sites categorized as Porn, Drugs, Violence, Explicit language, Weapons, or Gambling. You can optionally limit access to chat sites and Web-based e-mail as well. The filter relies both on a database of known URLs and on real-time examination of Web page content. Blocked pages are replaced by a stark message stating "The requested URL . . . is forbidden." Additionally, each attempt is logged, along with all URLs that are not blocked.

    KIS7 download

Like most parental-control systems, KIS7 lets you set limits on children’s Internet use. You can specify a daily maximum, and you can also define a schedule of times during which the Internet is available. Whereas most products offer a handy visual grid to schedule Internet access on a weekly basis, KIS7 makes you enter each time interval manually and uses the same schedule for every day of the week. If the time limit expires or the scheduled "on" time ends, there’s no warning. Internet access just cuts off, and any further connection attempts get the exact same warning that’s displayed when the child tries to access a forbidden site. That’s confusing; overall, the Parental Control UI needs a lot more work, in my opinion.

Concerned about privacy? Here’s a worry. When Parental Control is turned on, every URL visited by every user, regardless of that user’s profile, is logged. You can’t suppress logging for specific users or profiles, and you can’t delete individual log items without clearing the entire log. If you value your online privacy, you’ll want to clear it frequently or leave the Parental Control option turned off.

    KIS7 download

KIS7 spam filtering and parental control are no great shakes. On the other hand, the suite has real power in the areas most essential for security—firewall, antivirus, and antispyware. But you won’t get full protection using the default settings; you absolutely must raise the protection level in a dozen-odd areas. So although KIS7 is a capable suite, it’s not yet a particularly convenient one.

I don’t mind tweaking the settings; I get paid to dig into the guts of apps like this. But people who pay for security suites may be less willing to roll up their sleeves to configure it. Still, it’s a decent suite, and it wouldn’t take much for Kaspersky to fix the configuration problem. I’ll be interested to see how the next version stacks up if Kaspersky takes my recommendations to heart—and once it’s had more time to tweak the brand-new parental-control module.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 beta version

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the release of a beta version of Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 is a product that protects mail servers running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. The product scans incoming and outgoing messages for malicious code. Backup copies of objects are saved in a special storage area prior to treatment or deletion, ruling out the loss of information. The sender, recipient and IT security system administrator can be notified of any messages that include malicious objects.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 detects virus outbreaks and automatically takes emergency measures, at the same time notifying the system administrator of the outbreak. The product can also re-scan messages which have been scanned before in order to detect viruses that could not be detected during earlier scans. Such scanning is performed in the background and does not significantly affect the mail server’s performance.

The application’s parameters can be configured depending on the type and volume of mail traffic and the hardware characteristics, such as the amount of RAM, system performance, number of processors etc. Signature databases for Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 can be updated automatically or manually, from Kaspersky Lab FTP or HTTP update servers or from local network resources containing current updates.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 provides system administrators with a powerful and functional management console that can be used to configure and manage the server part of the product. The management module is implemented as a Microsoft Management Console snap-in.

The beta version of Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 can be downloaded from ftp://downloads1.kaspersky-labs.com/beta/ksexchange. The product’s description is available at http://www.kaspersky.com/beta?product=190809664.

Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 is certified as Cisco Compatible

    August 18, 2008

Kaspersky Lab announces that the Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 has successfully passed compatibility tests for the Cisco Trust Agent 2.1 application, a component of the Cisco NAC solution . Based on the test results, Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 was certified "Cisco Compatible".

The testing was performed in the laboratory of AppLabs Technologies, a service company.

Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 is a powerful and flexible tool for effective, centralized management of Kaspersky Lab products on networks of any size and complexity with support for remote offices and mobile users.

Cisco Network Admission Control (NAC) is a set of technologies and solutions providing control over network access, which is based on an industry-wide initiative implemented under the leadership of Cisco Systems. NAC enables customers to provide Internet access only to secure end-devices (e.g., workstations, servers and PDAs) which meet the requirements defined by the system administrator and to restrict access to devices that do not meet these requirements.

“The Open Space Security concept, on which the sixth generation of Kaspersky Lab business products are based, involves providing protection for all nodes on the corporate network regardless of their location. An important security component under this concept is checking mobile devices that return to the corporate network for compliance with its security policies. Cisco NAC support implemented in the Kaspersky Administration Kit does this by allowing access to the local network only for those computers which have antivirus protection meeting the requirements of the security policy,” says Alexey Kalgin, Deputy Product Development Director at Kaspersky Lab.

Additional information about Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 is available on the Kaspersky Lab website at http://www.kaspersky.com/administration_kit.

The list of products which are certified for use with Cisco NAC may be found at: http://www.cisco.com/web/partners/pr46/nac/partners.html.

    Symantec Norton Internet Security 2008

    Symantec Norton Internet Security 2008

    from: www.pcworld.com

Symantec’s Norton Internet Security 2008 suite offers solid security protection and features, including the best behavior-based defense against unknown threats.

Symantec’s Norton Internet Security 2008 security suite ($70 for up to three PCs) is easy to use and comes with a host of extra security features, such as a separate Security Inspector scan that warns about unsafe browser settings and other potential security holes. It was the only suite in our testing for "All-in-One Security Suites: Tried and Tested" that didn’t cry wolf by reporting at least one false positive.

It detected an above-average 91 percent of AV-Test.org’s 674,589 malware samples. This results put the Norton suite close behind the Avira Premium Security Suite, BitDefender Internet Security 2008 , Checkpoint ZoneAlarm Internet SecuritySuite 7.1, and Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 packages, each of which detected 95 percent or more of the malware samples. Nevertheless. a 4 percent difference in detection rates represents a difference of 26,983 undetected samples. Symantec’s suite produced the second-worst showing on AV-Test’s heuristic tests, catching only 10 percent of samples when required to use one-month-old signature files to detect unknown malware based on similarities to existing code.

The Symantec suite did outperform the other programs at getting rid of infections. It cleaned up 80 percent of all files and Registry entries added by malware. In particular, Norton was a champ at fighting rootkits–malware designed to hide other malware. It detected every active and inactive rootkit sample, and successfully neutralized those infections. Symantec’s suite was one of only two programs (Checkpoint was the other) to detect and block unidentified malware based solely on the way it behaved, but even so it caught just one sample out of five.

In our tests, on-demand (user-initiated) scans were more than 50 percent faster with Norton than with the next-fastest suite (Avira Premium), yielding an impressive data-analysis rate of 16.07 megabytes per second. And those on-demand scans look inside file archives, where crooks frequently hide malicious payloads. (On the other hand, Norton’s automatic scans, which check files as your system saves them to the hard drive, won’t check file archives unless you change the default settings).

Symantec’s firewall is polished. It successfully blocked attempts from outside to scan a protected PC for information, and it did better than most competing suites at refraining from issuing unnecessary warnings about benign apps such as Firefox and Internet Explorer.

In addition, Norton Internet Security 2008 displayed an apt warning when it detected an unencrypted wireless connection, and it incorporates various safe-browsing features. For example, its Norton Confidential toolbar, designed for Firefox and Internet Explorer, blocks phishing sites; and its Browser Defender checks for known vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer 6 and 7. Though the suite’s Identity Safe feature protects sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, from inadvertently leaving your PC, you’ll must manually tell it what information to protect–a standard but laborious process. It has no antispam or parental controls, but those features are freely downloadable from Symantec’s site.

The interface is well laid-out, and the software’s pop-up detection alerts are generally understandable, though they provide little information, such as where a threat was found. Its impressive log entries simplify the task of finding out what the program has been up to–but again they lack information about where a given threat was discovered.

Our one major criticism of the suite is that when we uninstalled it, it left behind the separate LiveUpdate component. You have to know to go back and remove LiveUpdate as well.

Norton Internet Security 2008 has a good design and an appealing feature set. It could be better at blocking malware, but it’s the best choice of the eight we looked at.
